Moving forward: USAID holds discussions on water quality testing with four communities in Central Region

A four-member team from the Water Quality Assurance Unit of the USAID has visited four communities in the Assin North and South Districts of Central Region. The team, led by the WASH Project Management Specialist, Emmanuel Odotei visited Breku Clinic and Kwamekwa communities in Assin North District and Akrofuom, Kramoakura communities in Assin South District.

The main purpose of the visit was to meet and discuss with various stakeholders, including the District Assemblies, Community Water and Sanitation Agency and the beneficiary communities on the best measures to put in place to test water quality periodically.

This scheme has become essential, because of the recent phenomenon of illegal mining activities, which is polluting underground water in the various communities. This development has made it imperative for communities to conduct tests at least once a year to ensure they are drinking water which is free of contaminants.

The field officer in the Central Region, Philip Aratuo said, “These were discussions. The team from USAID was opening these issues up to the District Assemblies and other stakeholders to see if there can be collaboration with the Community Water and Sanitation Agency to ensure that the periodic water tests are done in the communities.” Arantuo continued, “The team tried to see how best the District Assembly can also support the communities to mobilize funding to perform the water quality test on their own.”

At the community level, there were discussions on the phenomenon of underground pollution and how it affected water quality. “This was to trigger communities that were not close to areas directly involved in underground pollution.” Arantuo said, “But in time, there would be the need for them to test their water to see if foreign materials have been introduced. Such communities were also advised to do periodic water quality tests.” Arantuo concludes.

Through the GWASH Project, 12 mechanically drilled and 24 manually drilled boreholes have been provided for communities in the Assin North District, while 8 mechanically drilled and 16 manually drilled boreholes were provided for communities in the Assin South District. Seventy-seven boreholes were repaired in both districts during the Project.
