Fifty-nine household latrines have been completed in Sefwi Nkonya, in the Sefwi Wiaso district of Western Region. This leaves the number of latrines to be completed in the district to 35 (in the community of Sefwi Bonwire), with 341 in the entire region.

Richard Boateng, sanitation field officer for the Ghana WASH Project in the Western Region, said, “We are happy at the pace of the construction of the latrines. With the pace at which they are going, we are assured that the construction of the latrines will be complete by January ending. ” Richard added, “Out of the total number of latrines to be constructed, 200 are in their super-structure stages, while the remaining number is in their sub-structure stages.”

The Ghana WASH Project extended its activities to Sefwi Nkonya in 2012, thanks to a collaboration with Peace Corps Volunteer Steve Burgoon. Burgoon reached out to the project for support and facilitated the collaboration with the community, which resulted in 48 household latrines for households.

Through Burgoon and his community counterpart’s Small Grants Application, the project also provided two institutional latrines to Sefwi Nkonya Junior High School. Although Steve has finished his service, the project continues its work there, and these recently completed 59 latrines are the second round of sanitation support for this community, due to community members’ strong commitment and demand for sanitation improvements.

In Aowin Suaman district, two institutional latrines were also completed this week. The remaining three latrines in the district (to be completed) are at the sub-structure stages, for a total of five institutional latrines in the district to be completed during this extension period.
